The Cowlitz Divide Trail offers hikers a stunning journey along one of Mount Rainier National Park’s most scenic ridgelines. Beginning near Box Canyon, the trail climbs steadily through shady forests of fir and hemlock before breaking into expansive subalpine meadows bursting with wildflowers in summer.
As the path ascends, hikers are rewarded with sweeping vistas of the Cowlitz Valley below and dramatic views of Mount Rainier’s icy slopes rising to the west. The divide stretches along high ridges for miles, with opportunities to spot elk, marmots, and soaring raptors. While the full trail extends nearly 9 miles one way, many hikers choose shorter out-and-back excursions to enjoy the panoramic scenery without committing to the entire distance.
Quiet, wild, and breathtakingly beautiful, the Cowlitz Divide provides a memorable backcountry experience for those seeking solitude and big views in the heart of the park.
