Tucked within the William O. Douglas Wilderness near White Pass, the Sand Lake Trail (#60) is a delightful 5.2-mile round-trip hike beginning just east of the pass. This family-friendly route follows the iconic Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) through lush old-growth forests and quiet meadows, passing Deer Lake before arriving at serene Sand Lake, nestled in a peaceful alpine meadow.Â
The elevation gain is moderate—around 960 feet—making it accessible for a wide range of hikers. Along the way, you’ll encounter vibrant fall colors, wildflowers, and even elk tracks in late summer.
Pack a Northwest Forest Pass, since it’s required for parking, and pick up a free wilderness permit at the trailhead. This easy-to-moderate hike offers a perfect mix of calm natural beauty and trail accessibility—a great escape for families and day-hikers.
