Built in 1934, the Burley Mountain fire lookout stands about 5,100 feet above sea level and looks over miles of the Gifford Pinchot National Forest.
It’s still used in the summer for fire detection on occasion, and is also available for overnight rentals. Backpackers, hikers, mountain bikers and more have made their way up to the lookout, from which you can see several Cascade peaks on a bright day.
The Burley Mountain Lookout is a 14’ by 14’ foot grand house with no catwalk, and in recent years has been restored by volunteers. It is administered by the U.S. Forest Service and was added to the National Historic Lookout Register in 2000.
To get to Burley Mountain, follow Forest Road 23 to Cispus Road, then follow the signs to the lookout. High-profile vehicles are recommended for the journey; four-wheel drive is also recommended.
