Winding through ancient, old-growth forest, the Laughingwater Creek Trail (also known as the Three Lakes Trail) offers a rewarding yet demanding outing. Largely climbing above its namesake, the route begins gently before transitioning into a steady uphill for about 3 miles, then steepens substantially over the next 3.5 miles toward the ridge.
Along the way, the forest reveals tranquil beauty: moss-draped giants, ferny glades, and occasional wildflower pockets. After approximately 6 miles, hikers reach the hidden gems of Three Lakes—a trio of caldera tarns nestled beneath a ridge, alongside a historic patrol cabin. With about 2,800–2,825 feet of elevation gain over a 12-mile round trip, the hike generally takes 6 to 7 hours to complete. On clear days, stepping just beyond the lakes reveals a spectacular vantage point of Mount Rainier itself. Strenuous yet scenic, this trail is a standout for hikers seeking solitude and alpine charm.
